THE BURNET NEWS CLUB

The Burnet News Club (BNC) enables students to explore mind-stretching topics from Brexit to Black Lives Matter and hear a range of perspectives on each news story. Each half-term (six-times a year) we send teachers a package of learning resources on a current affairs topic (“The Issue”), which they use to deliver a weekly news club. The Issue includes step-by-step teaching guides, colourful activities and multimedia presentations for lively interactive activities, along with in-depth news content which covers the big issues of our time. The Issue is a collaboration between specialist teachers and The Economist’s journalists, fact-checkers and editors. It is contributed to by topic experts and people with lived experience of the issues.

BNC students also use the Hub, a dedicated online site to publish their work to a real audience. They discuss the Issue with other club members in different communities, and get feedback on their ideas from topic experts, from personalities like Stephen Fry, to astronauts and politicians.

One Issue might need an infographic that depicts the potential pathways for the future of the NHS, while the next Issue might require you to photoshop green scales and purple eyes onto a cat to help students understand the need to understand the bigger picture.

What is VEED.IO?

Me (Sabba) and my co-founder Tim started VEED, an online video editing app just over a year ago. Since then we have grown much faster than we expected, about 40% every month! Thousands of influencers, brands, schools, artists, and podcasters create content on our platform every day. Hey, you might even know some of them 🙂 We are a bootstrapped company and have always been public about our revenue, growth and failure.

VEED.IO is looking for a UX / Product Designer.

So far I (Sabba) have designed everything on the site and sadly I just dont have enough time to keep up with the growing product demands. Therefore we are looking for someone to take the take ownership of the UX and continue building VEED into something really special.

We would love to see applications from designers with 3+ Years of experience working with user interface design. Someone who can make smart UX decisions and turn complex flows into simple interactions.

Someone how can make functional products simple and beautiful.

You will be working alongside Aryana a super talented UI designer and also myself. You must have good communication skill, be able to build relationships with our users regularly and run regular user testing sessions.

How we build the product

We love talking to our users and think it is the best way to get to know them. This is important because after all, they are the ones paying for it!

To date, this strategy has guided our entire product development and has served us extremely well. That being said, there is a lot of room for creativity, experimentation and learning.

Bonus points: Brand skills, dev skills, content creation skills.

What will you be doing?

Building a video editor! You get to design and change the way people create videos, VEED is used by almost 10,000 people every day, I MEAN COME ON, how cool it that!

Where, when how?

Work remotely?

Work from home with your dog?

Bring the dog into the office?

Need a few days off?

Work part-time in the office?

Work in a cafe?

Swap a weekday for a weekend?

Working a half-day?

All of the above is 100% good for us! Our entire team is remote (and always has been). We are happy as long you’re happy. You will have the freedom and autonomy you need to make decisions and do your best work. Our team is smart, young, and extremely talented and driven. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we all love what we do.

OH one more thing! We would really encourage applications from female UX designer! Our team is diverse and we want to keep it that way 🙂

About you: You’re a skilled digital designer looking to make a difference with the products you work on.  You want to put your time to a good use – helping socially progressive organisations to communicate their knowledge and ideas online.

You are happy to work independently but aren’t afraid to ask for help when you encounter tricky issues, and you’re always willing to help colleagues find solutions when they get stuck.

You stay on top of new trends and innovations in web design and find ways to apply them to your own work. As a plus, you may also have previous knowledge  of component based workflows,  pattern libraries and design systems, as well as ability to sufficiently prototype and/or animate.

You will have the confidence and communication skills to engage directly with clients and to explain your proposed solutions to them. It would also be great if you had some experience working for non-profit clients.

You must also have fluent written and spoken English.

About the job: You will work as part of a small  in-house team of digital designers, led by our Lead Digital Designer. You will also collaborate closely with other colleagues, including project managers, developers and content strategists.

The main focus of the job is to execute design tasks to a high standard; from new websites and other digital products to improving existing ones. Most of our digital projects involve the delivery of an organisation’s main website, but we also build smaller sites and other products, including our flagship online Reader.

You will work with clients and colleagues to ensure that user experience, user interface and visual design considerations are given due weight and attention throughout the lifecycle of digital jobs and projects. You may also assist colleagues  in quoting for design jobs as required.

We expect all our staff to act autonomously and take responsibility for their own projects – with support when they need it, of course – so they can feel a personal sense of accomplishment when we successfully complete a piece of work.

The role is normally based in our Whitechapel studio, which is still open for a limited number of staff. We are currently offering optional remote working due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but we plan to return to our studio as soon as it is safe to do so.

What we offer:

  • Flexible working hours and policy
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity pay
  • 25 days holiday per year (plus three additional days off over the holiday season)
  • Matched pension contributions
  • Regular social activities
  • Cycle and tech loans
  • Barista quality coffee, snacks and fresh fruit

About us: We’re a design and digital communications agency focused on ideas that matter. We work with many of the world’s leading charities, NGOs and research organisations. Our main services include publication design, digital design and development, branding, information design, and film and animation.

We are a flexible and fair employer and our values run through everything we do, from the clients we work with to the way we treat our staff.

We are a close-knit, hard-working and ambitious agency with a growing roster of clients around the world. We have an informal all-agency meeting via video conference each week and there’s a calendar of staff events across the year, including a summer picnic and winter walk.

We have two studios in the UK – one with stunning views over the City and East End in Whitechapel, and the other on the banks of the Avon in the centre of Bath. Both studios have been fitted out to a high standard, with excellent social spaces.

If that sounds appealing, get in touch.

To apply please send your CV and a covering letter.

About us

We are an international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world.

We help people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop ingenious, lasting and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. And we share what works with others, so answers that start small can grow big.

We’re a global change-making group. The group consists of a UK registered charity with community projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, an independent development publishing company and a technical consulting service. We combine these specialisms to multiply our impact and help shape a world that works better for everyone.
