The Product Engineer role involves design and engineering lighting products for high value commercial, residential, designer and architectural projects. Ensuring that the build and quality of the products given for that project, exceeds client expectations and requirements in a short time-frame. The ideal candidate would be able to have the following skills:
Experience:
- Degree-level technical qualification with a background in Design Engineering, Mechanical Product Design and/or Industrial Design. 2-3 years minimum industry experience..
- Experience in designing industrial products for commercial settings. Be confident in designing, calculating and evaluating stresses that can apply to bespoke projects. For example loads on heavy-duty suspension cables and their mount points, or wind resistance on lamp posts.
- Be able to apply sound engineering standards. Identify, solve, implement and verify technical solutions autonomously as part of a team.
- An innate understanding of manufacturing techniques, cost and its limitations.
- An innate understanding of technical lighting componentry, cost and its limitations.
- Have experience in creating physical prototypes in-house or with local businesses to produce samples in a quick turn-around.
Software:
- Extensive experience in Solidworks, you should be able to do the following as a minimum:
- Create and evaluate component assemblies in Solidworks. Evaluate suitable materials, finishes and manufacturing methods.
- Utilise your CAD model to create detailed technical drawings and BOMs that would be sent to manufacturers or quotations team.
- Be able to utilise the sheet-metal and welding tools in Solidworks.
- Other areas of Solidworks expertise is a big plus i.e stress weight calculations, simulations etc.
- Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud to create concept visuals, outline design construction and alter drawings when needed
- Confidence in the Microsoft applications suite.
Interpersonal:
- Be confident in managing multiple high-value projects simultaneously. This will include communicating with clients and other team members on a regular basis throughout the project’s development. Whilst also managing lead times, new requests and assessing cost limitation through DFM.
- Be confident in communicating with manufacturing partners from the UK and far east. This may include making samples, improvements to existing designs, sourcing componentry and evaluating quotes for large MOQs.
- Advise on adapting the construction of existing products to meet advanced needs like higher IP/IK ratings, emergency requirements, meeting Part-L and other building regulations. Whilst also communicating all risks involved.
- Have a positive can-do attitude and strive to learn and improve yourself. Whether it’s introducing new tools, processes or strategies that will aid new design concepts, processes, project lead-times.
- Have a friendly personality and willingness to learn from and support other individuals in the business. Be a team player and take ownership of the work given.
- Be willing to travel if required.
