The Designer is responsible for all the Union’s design outputs at the Union. We are looking for someone to produce a range of communications materials and digital content across all our owned channels (social and web) as well as email, out of home display, print, signage, events, campaigns and marketing collateral. You will also work in partnership with external creatives and agencies to ensure that all work is consistent with our brand. In addition, you will also provide advice to student staff to help them produce effective and on brand communications for our audiences.

You will play a key role in reviewing and implementing the Union’s brand and work closely with the wider marketing team to develop content for our members, to deepen their engagement with the Union, and better understand our work. You will also deliver, often at pace, collateral for the Union’s bars and venues to promote activities.

The role will also champion sustainability and work to ensure that our communications reflect the Union’s ambition to be a more diverse and inclusion organisation. We are looking for someone who will be able to operate with autonomy and balance contending priorities in this exciting role, which is in a fast-paced but ultimately rewarding environment. We are also committed to supporting your professional development, elaborating on your excellent technical and interpersonal skills among others.

Duties and responsibilities

Key responsibilities:

  • To build and create new concepts and artwork for use across all channels
  • Produce outputs at pace against tight deadlines, without any loss in quality or creativity
  • Give ideas and creative solutions to internal clients and team members, taking the time to fully understand the design needs, taking feedback and adapting as needed
  • An ambassador for the brand, making sure all designs are on brief and within brand guidelines
  • Support the wider team in creating visual assets
  • Gives feedback to student staff carrying out design or creative work for the Union
  • Closely work with the Marketing & Engagement Manager across their workload and coordinate all design elements of Union campaigns

Essential requirements

  • A portfolio of work demonstrating experience in producing work relevant to the role
  • Experience of developing and delivering design outputs that achieve the objectives of the brief
  • Experience of working with style guidelines and design systems to create engaging content
  • Experience of working to deadlines and keeping team members on top of deadlines
  • Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop)
  • Good knowledge of digital design packages (eg Dreamweaver) and HMTL (CSS)
  • Highly creative with a portfolio demonstrating own creative response to briefs
  • Ability to manage competing priorities with the ability to also work autonomously
  • Proactive, supportive and with a team attitude
  • Resourceful and able operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to working in a democratic and student led environment
