Reporting to the Director of Publications, your primary role will be to redraw and illustrate basic and conceptual figures to a standard style for the Society’s journals and books, proactively liaising with copyeditors and authors to ensure quality and accuracy. You will also be involved in maintaining the publications’ websites using a CMS and basic HTML, and ensuring online adverts are hosted to clients’ requirements. Other duties will include ensuring the quality of figures redrawn by an external supplier; designing publication covers and layout templates; designing static adverts for online and print usage; manipulating files to output for online or print use; and ad hoc layout/typesetting of publications in InDesign.
The position is permanent and part-time (80%), based in the office in Sheffield. Due to the pandemic, home working is currently in operation, and when the office reopens a mix of home/office working is envisioned.
Experience/skills (essential):
- Moderate to advanced Adobe CS (particularly Illustrator and Photoshop)
- Moderate to advanced Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Understanding of principles of HTML/XML
- Understanding of output requirements for online and print
- Eye for detail
- Ability to use initiative
- Good team worker
- Good level of English grammar and spelling
Experience/skills (desirable):
- Awareness and experience of Drupal-based CMS
- Awareness and experience of using Google Analytics
- Awareness and experience of using Google Ad Manager for Publishers
- Understanding of BSI proof markup
- Basic understanding of copyright and reuse rules as they apply to images
- Knowledge of Affinity Designer and/or Affinity Photo
- Qualification in Biological science GCSE or above
