Hours: Full time
Salary: £34,000 – £38,000 depending on experience
Contract: Permanent, with 6 months probation period

We are looking for an experienced Lead Designer for a permanent position at The Calvert Journal, a thriving online magazine focused on the culture and creativity of modern Russia, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

The company is based within Calvert 22 Foundation, a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to the contemporary art and culture of Russia and Eastern Europe.

The Lead Designer will enhance our brand, make our media platforms exciting and user-friendly, and be able to transform content ideas into multimedia experiences.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

– Commissioning, editing and proofing content
– Generating feature ideas and news stories
– Writing features, news and other editorial copy
– Managing liaison with freelance contributors and Journal editorial partners
– Managing daily content flow
– Contributing to the development and realisation of large-scale special projects
– Contributing to the development and implementation of social networking strategy
– Line management of members of the editorial team
– Photo research

Required Skills

– Exceptional organisational skills and an ability to manage daily/weekly/monthly workflow independently
– Excellent journalistic abilities in writing, editing and communication
– Experience of using an online content management system
– Excellent attention to detail (e.g. grammar, style, consistency)

Person Specification

– Minimum two years journalistic or editorial experience in a similar features role
– Engaging writing style and the ability to generate a constant flow of feature ideas
– Fast, efficient editor of copy with strong proofreading skills
– Able to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, while meeting deadlines
– Deep and demonstrable knowledge of contemporary culture including film, design, literature, architecture/urbanism and music
– Excellent communication skills
– Ability to work collaboratively with local and remote contributors
– Detail oriented
– Good interpersonal and teamwork skills
– Good commercial awareness
– Enthusiasm, drive and flexibility
– Ability to work as part of a team and on individual projects

Desirable, but not essential

– Native English speaker
– Knowledge and insight into the contemporary culture of Russia and/or other Eastern European, Caucasian, Central Asian countries
– Strong written or spoken Russian
– Knowledge of UK libel laws
– Understanding of a website statistics tool such as Google Analytics
